e reduced polio cases by 99.9 percent worldwide. In 1985\, Rotary launched
PolioPlus\, the first and largest internationally coordinated private-sec
tor support of a public health initiative\, with an initial fundraising ta
rget of USD 120 million. Next\, Rotary and the World Health Organization l
aunched the Global Polio Eradication Initiative in 1988 when there were an
estimated 350\,000 cases of polio in 125 countries. World Polio Day is on
24 October every year and Rotary activities are conducted in October to r
aise awareness of the importance of polio vaccinations to protect every ch
ild from this devastating disease\, and to celebrate the many parents\, pr
ofessionals and volunteers whose contributions have made polio eradication
  achievable.
