Please be invited to the handover of one of our community service projects to promote education and literacy for the children at Ban Nern Phayom School on 24 November. In another international joint-project with the Rotary Club of Aireborough, we are going to deliver a set of 160 children’s books in Thai language to augment the school’s library. The books were selected by the academics of Chulalongkorn University to promote literacy, increase vocabulary, and reader comprehension. The teacher Sirpapop stated, “Our children love reading illustrated storybooks and at school we have reading promotion activities where children write summaries of the books they have read.” It is a government school for 130 children grades 1 to 8 with 11 teachers, and located in a remote, undeveloped region in the Nong Phlap subdistrict, about a 45-minute drive from Bluport Shopping Mall. There is no provincial electricity grid in the area but they do have intermittent solar power. The WIFI Internet connection is weak and often interrupted making online learning difficult. “Children’s books are a powerful tool enhancing the brain development of a young child, especially their all-important language skills. Stories not only bring happiness and enjoyment, but also add new words to a child’s vocabulary, help them develop and practice their comprehension, and lay the foundation for them to understand the concept of reading.” (UNICEF Thailand, 2024) Register your name on CR as usual and be sure to view the map for the location and directions to the school. We hope to see you there to UNITE FOR GOOD in the spirit of Rotary! Dress code: Smart casual with your favorite Rotary shirt |

Please be invited to our club lunch meeting on 25 November where we welcome guest speaker Dr. Antoinette van de Water, a Dutch conservationist who will speak about the research and development activities of the Bring The Elephant Home Foundation. During her talk, Antoinette will share how their community-driven approaches in Thailand, from fieldwork to science, are shaping new models of human–elephant coexistence. In Thailand, the focus is on Kuiburi National Park, home to more than 300 wild elephants. Antoinette and her team collaborate with farmers and rangers on practical, nature-based solutions: studying elephant behavior, community engagement, planting elephant-friendly crops, and using beehive fences to reduce human-elephant conflicts. A flagship initiative is the Tom Yum Project, where farmers grow lemongrass, galangal, and chili peppers, crops elephants avoid, and turn them into sustainable, elephant-friendly products. About the BTEH Foundation Founded by Dr. Antoinette, the organization is a Dutch, Thai, and South African NGO, officially registered in Hua Hin and they have spent more than 20 years working in Asia and Africa to transform human–elephant conflict into coexistence. Registration is required and if you register and then decide that you won’t be able to attend, be sure to delete your names from the registered list on our Club Runner website by 23 November. We need to inform the venue of the headcount in advance and non-Rotarian friends are welcome to attend as always. We hope to see you there!
