Our charter member Rotarian Michael Ruess attended the Centennial Celebration of the Rotary Club of San Mateo, one of the first clubs in California, USA on 15 May 2024. Held at the prestigious Peninsula Golf and Country Club, President John Barrett with esteemed Rotarians and guests welcomed the keynote speaker Rotary International President R. Gordon R. McInally and his wife Heather to celebrate their club’s 100 years of community service at the gala dinner.
A Rotarian since 1995, John co-founded The Cambodia Academy in 2004 with our club’s late member Hans Eide, and Michael has been on the school’s board of directors since 2014. John has been active in their club’s World Community Service Committee and he attended one of our club lunch meetings six years ago after returning from a trip to Mongkol Borei, Cambodia.
Chartered in 1924, the Rotary Club of San Mateo has donated more than USD 2 million for underprivileged student scholarships and implemented numerous life-changing International Service projects over the decades. Our club and individual members have sponsored disadvantaged children enrolled at The Cambodia Academy for many years as well.
