Embracing the ideals of University Social Responsibility, 80 students from Silpakorn University’s Faculty of Animal Sciences & Agricultural Technology and Faculty of Management Science joined forces to conduct their 9th annual “Chao Silp Rural Development Volunteer Project” from 9-11 January. This student-led initiative provided the participants with practical, hands-on experience organizing altruistic service projects for community engagement and inclusion with a focus on animal welfare.
The volunteers set up their operation’s base camp in the morning at the Naresuan Huay Phueng Border Patrol Police School in the mountainous region of Pala-U sub-district about an hour’s drive from the center of Hua Hin City. National Children’s Day was celebrated on the first day and the students organized fun activities and games, and clothes, snacks and toys were provided for all the 120 kids.
In cooperation with the Hua Hin Livestock Office, the students administered doses of anti-parasite, vitamins, and vaccines against foot and mouth disease for 155 beef and dairy cows at 12 nearby farms. They also vaccinated 120 laying hens against Newcastle disease at the school while another group performed spaying and neutering surgeries for 20 dogs and cats, and injected 43 dogs and cats with rabies vaccinations.
Another student group repainted the front wall of the school with surface preparation and priming before painting, and further beautified the entrance with the creation of a new flower garden.
This 3-day event required extensive planning, preparation and coordination with guidance from Dr. Sirichai, DVM, and it was highly impressive to witness the self-motivated teams of volunteers successfully execute this multifaceted service project with the spirit of generosity while providing meaningful outcomes for our stakeholders.
Our club sponsored this service project including the Children’s Day event, volunteer meals, equipment and vaccines, and round-trip transportation using three large buses, while the volunteers raised additional funds for other expenses.
The Rotary Club of Royal Hua Hin is happy to have collaborated with Silpakorn University in this high-impact community service project and support the personal development of our future leaders as we UNITE FOR GOOD in the spirit of Rotary!
