Whilst considering what project to do for World Polio Day Past President Napa who is also our Service Projects Chair had spoken with Hua Hin Hospital and was told that although those in quarantine were fed, they craved some of the comfort foods such as snacks and hot drinks during their quarantine.

It was agreed that the Rotary Club of Royal Hua Hin would donate 120 bags of goodies to help make their stay a little more less challenging, and this would be our clubs project to commemorate World Polio Day. Although World Polio Day is officially on the 24th October, the 22nd October was chosen as another joint project will happen on the 24th.
This field hospital is one of three in Hua Hin and is designated a green field hospital which in terms means that the people staying here are not suffering the severe effects of Covid-19 such as respiratory problems.
The other two field hospitals are Hua Hin 5 and Hua Hin hospital.

The field hospital is manned 24 hours a day by 10 nurses on each of the three eight-hour shifts plus support staff.

Handing over the goody bags to nurses was Past President Napa, Youth Services chair Benjamas and President Phil Lawrence.

The little girl below left is due to be released from Quarantine but wanted to wait to receive her goody bag.

Polio Today.
When Rotary and its partners formed the GPEI in 1988, there were 350,000 cases of polio in 125 countries every year. Today, we have reduced polio cases by 99.9 percent, and just two countries continue to report cases of wild poliovirus: Afghanistan and Pakistan. Because of the efforts of Rotary and its partners, nearly 19.4 million people who would otherwise have been paralyzed are walking, and more than 1.5 million people are alive who would otherwise have died. The infrastructure we helped build to end polio is also being used to treat and prevent other diseases (including COVID-19) and create lasting impact in other areas of public health.

Five Reasons why we must eradicate Polio
1           YOUR GIFT WILL IMPROVE LIVES
Today, 19 million people who would otherwise be paralyzed by polio are walking, and 1.5 million people who would otherwise have died are alive.
2          YOUR GIFT WILL INVEST IN THE FUTURE.
If all eradication efforts stopped today, within 10 years, polio could paralyze as many as 200,000 children each year. A polio-free world will be a healthier world for children everywhere.
3          YOUR GIFT WILL IMPROVE CHILD HEALTH.
Polio surveillance networks and vaccination campaigns also monitor children for other health problems, like vitamin deficiency and measles, so we can address them sooner.
4          YOUR GIFT WILL LOWER HEALTH CARE COSTS.
The global effort to eradicate polio has already saved more than $27 billion in health care costs since 1988, and expects to save $14 billion more by 2050.
5          YOUR GIFT WILL MAKE HISTORY
Polio eradication will be one of history’s greatest public health achievements, with polio following smallpox to become only the second human disease eradicated from the world.
