Our Rotarians handed over another one of our “Library For Literacy” projects to promote reading and literacy for the children at Ban Huay Sai Ngam School on 29 September. In a joint project with the Rotary Club of Nakhon Pathom, the home club of our Rotary District 3330 Governor Dr. Chatchawal Wongwiwatwaitaiya, we delivered a new set of 160 storybooks in English and Thai language to augment the school’s library. The books were selected by the academics of Chulalongkorn University to promote literacy, increase vocabulary, and develop reader comprehension among children.
Rotary International’s theme for the month of September is Basic Education and Literacy, to highlight one of its core areas of focus aimed at reducing poverty and empowering communities, and our longstanding Library For Literacy project regularly donates books to the schools in our region.
Ban Huay Sai Ngam School is an impressive government school for 157 children in grades 1 to 8 with 10 dedicated teachers. It is supported by the Bright Dawn Foundation in Thailand whose mission is to enhance the lives of low-income children by providing them with healthcare and educational support while studying at the primary schools in Hua Hin.
“Children’s books are a powerful tool enhancing the brain development of a young child, especially their all-important language skills. Stories not only bring happiness and enjoyment, but also add new words to a child’s vocabulary, help them develop and practice their comprehension, and lay the foundation for them to understand the concept of reading.” (UNICEF Thailand, 2024)
